Biological risk factors for dementia in India

Background Many clinical biomarkers have been associated with dementia. This paper uses a novel data set from an understudied population – national sample of older Indians - to assess the relative importance 41 using variety approaches. The value these is extensiveness biomarker collection, validated classification dementia, and uniqueness low average education. approaches both summarizing reducing complexity suggested. Some are based on theory about biological mechanisms some agnostic machine-learning results informative for others collecting analyzing in samples. Method We use 6 assessing explaining variance dementia diagnosis cognitive functioning traditional social science machine learning. aim different determine how best characterize influence biology as well trim combine data. five measuring risk: individual biomarkers; identification subsets elastic net; support vector learning; factors developed factor analysis; principal components approach; theoretical approach. Results indicate if explain all or reduced identified by net do job at variability. However, markers chosen most important not fit our understanding mechanisms. Conclusion If systems, approaches, e.g. analysis approach, allow better interpretation performance.
